Tritium specialist
Renaissance Fusion
Tritium specialist
We are looking for a tritium specialist to take part in the fuel cycle management process, handling tritium separation from liquid metals, together with heat management and chemical characterization for reinjecting in the device, while implementing safety protocols related to the handling of the material. The separation step is a key part of the direct recycling loop of the stellarator and is an essential step towards a controlled fuel cycle.
Your main responsibilities will be:
*Design, experiments and analysis:
- Identify techniques and materials to be used in in-house experiments and fusion power plants
- Design and operate tritium separation experiments
- Implement appropriate diagnostic and characterization techniques to determine process efficiency
- Carry out physical-chemical measurements to determine phase transitions and precipitation of metal hydrides enriched in a particular hydrogen isotope or metal isotope
- Establish and maintain collaborations with academic and/or industrial partners on the relevant topics
* Scientific communication and monitoring:
- Prepare scientific reports (presentations, posters, etc.) and represent Renaissance Fusion to scientific conferences and workshops.
- Participate in the writing of patents and scientific papers.
- Remain on the lookout for any scientific developments in his/her field of expertise.
You are the ideal profile if:
*Education and professional experience
- PhD or Master’s degree + equivalent experience in materials science, chemical engineering, metallurgy, nuclear engineering or related field.
- 3+ years’ experience in the chemistry related to Tritium.
- 3+ year’s hands-on experience on surface characterisation: microscopy (optical, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy…), spectroscopy (X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy…).
- Knowledge of the Fuel Cycle of Tritium in the context of fusion devices is a plus.
*Language requirements
- Fluent in English (C1).
- Knowledge (B1 or higher) of French is a plus.
*Technical competencies
- Elaboration of materials, heat treatment, cold traps, solidification and phase separation, phase change...
- Experience with health and safety requirements for the handling of flammable/hot/toxic solids, liquids and gases in general, and alkali in particular, and related to Tritium.
- Experience in isotopic separation or detritiation techniques is a plus.
- Familiarity with materials and processes used in the nuclear sector (fission and/or fusion).
- Physical metallurgy, crystallography, surface chemistry, kinetics, mass transfers, reduction-oxidation, thermodynamics and thermochemistry.
