At Renaissance Fusion, we are developing an innovative approach to simplify the fabrication of powerful and complex magnets required for fusion reactors of the stellarator type. This innovative approach replaces traditional 3D filamentary coils with cylindrical superconducting surfaces that feature intricate 2D current patterns. Although these patterns are complex, their implementation can be simplified by laser engraving the conductive surface, thereby guiding the electric current along optimized paths.
Beyond stellarators, the patterning of wide superconducting surfaces holds an immense potential to streamline the design and fabrication of other specialized magnetic devices, such as gyrotrons and MRI magnets, energy storage systems, motors/generators, undulators, and more. This internship project focuses on exploring and demonstrating the application of this technology to devices beyond stellarator magnets.
We offer a 6-months end-of-study internship to explore new applications of patterned wide superconducting surfaces.
Responsibilities
- Identify and categorize potential applications for patterned wide superconducting surfaces.
- Compile requirements for each potential application, including field configuration, field strength, typical dimensions, and performance metrics.
- Develop 0D models for identified applications, translating requirements into electrical, thermal, and mechanical specifications.
- Utilize, adapt, and extend the capabilities of specialized software tools developed by the company to design magnets based on patterned wide surfaces.
- Analyze and optimize the performance of designed magnets with respect to the metrics relevant to each application.
- Conduct comparative studies of patterned surface designs against traditional coil designs to assess performance gains or trade-offs.
- Document findings and provide regular progress updates through technical reports and presentations.
Requirements
- You are currently studying engineering, physics, applied mathematics or similar and are in your last year before completing your MSc.
- You are highly passionate about what you do and love the idea of contributing actively to building a durable source of abundant clean energy.
- You are available to work onsite in Fontaine (38, Grenoble area)
- You speak English fluently; French is a plus.
