About General Galactic

At General Galactic, our mission is to build a fossil-free future and revolutionize the world’s energy supply chain. We’re a seed-stage deeptech startup developing Genesis – a modular hardware platform that converts emissions into 100% fossil-free hydrocarbon fuel, directly compatible with today’s energy infrastructure. Our technology is built to enable the new era of clean energy independence on Earth, as well as the next generation of space missions beyond.

Job Description

You will work closely with the founders and technical team to develop critical technology for our systems. You’ll have extreme ownership over your work, move quickly, and operate with high agency. As we grow, there will be opportunities to expand your role with the company.

You will lead process design, development, and integration for the commercial-scale GENESIS system – including ownership from clean sheet design through to commissioning and operation.

Total responsibilities may be tailored to the candidate’s profile and could include:

  • Generate detailed process flow diagrams, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, and process simulations (using Aspen or similar industry standard software)
  • Size & specify equipment/components (e.g. heat exchangers, condensers, valves, etc.)
  • Evaluate when to build or outsource, and execute designs through to operation
  • Ownership of key supplier relationships
  • Lead system optimization and cost reduction
  • Direct ownership of system safety and operability; lead HAZOPs
  • Work with the technical team and outside partners to build robust techno-economic models and deployment cost estimates
  • Support technical team in tech development, scale-up, and integration/manufacturing; analyze data and provide recommendations for future development
  • Direct contribution to the growth of the company

Requirements

Successful applicants should have many of the following:

  • 5+ years of experience in chemical process design and optimization, ideally in petrochemicals or similar industry
  • Experience with the full cycle of plant design from concept to construction to shakedown to operation
  • Deep understanding of process safety, including the ability to conduct hazard analyses, implement safety measures, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
  • Knowledge of process simulation tools (e.g. Aspen) and programming languages
  • Work experience with the detailed design, development and down-selection of equipment; working with outside vendors
  • Experience with Basic Engineering Packages (BEPs) and/or Front End Engineering Design (FEED) packages for projects in chemical or fuels processing
  • Understanding of technical challenges associated with scaling and deploying a novel commercial hardware solution in the energy space
  • Strong engineering background and first-principles approach to problem solving
  • Ability to perform trade studies and technical analyses, and make clear recommendations using first principles even with incomplete/partial information
